Currently it costs $8400 for an entire year. That includes room & board, tuition and student fees. Textbooks will cost about $250 per semester on top of that, unless the student is able to buy used books or borrow from a friend. There is a bookstore on campus which stocks textbooks for all classes.
Will my child qualify for a student loan if he or she goes to a Bible college?
Yes, there are. NBC offers several athletic and music scholarships each year as well as an early application incentive. There are also a number of bursaries for which students and applicants may apply in the summer. There are more details in the financial section of the catalogue, and you can contact NBC with any additional questions. All of the bursaries and scholarships have application deadlines, so check them out soon!
Can a student have a job while at NBC?
While it’s not impossible, this would be a very difficult thing to do. Although it is ultimately up to each individual student, it would be tough to schedule a job into school life and the student would end up missing some of the fun parts of campus life. Resident (dorm) students are expected to participate in the Student Work program, which is like working 6 hours each week in a part-time job on campus. The Student Work program helps keep room & board fees low. A student can opt out of the program by paying an additional fee equal to Saskatchewan minimum wage multiplied by the number of hours he or she would have been required to work.
What’s the deadline for applications?
NBC receives applications right up until the beginning of school. It makes good sense to apply as soon as possible since there are financial incentives for early application, and applying before August 15th allows you to apply for bursaries.
Students who apply at the end of August or in September can speed up the process by faxing in the application form and by asking their references to also fax in their forms as quickly as possible.
Would it be possible for us to visit the campus before school starts?
We would love to show you the campus! Just call the school’s toll-free number (1-888-862-5095) and we can set up a visit for you. If it works for you to come while school is in session, you would be welcome to sit in on some classes and you would have the opportunity to meet some of the faculty and speak with current students. No matter what time of year you come, we would be happy to give you a tour of the campus and have you chat with some of our staff.
Can my child transfer to another Bible college from NBC?
NBC students who have moved on to other Bible colleges and seminaries in Canada have had good transfer of credit. NBC holds to a high academic standard so that our students can continue their studies at other Bible colleges or at seminary without any problem.
Can my child transfer to a secular college or University from NBC?
It would be difficult to transfer credit from most Bible colleges to secular schools, regardless of the accreditation status. Because NBC is non-accredited, it would be very unlikely.
My child has already been to another college. Does NBC transfer credits in?
Yes. NBC tries to be as accommodating as possible to students who transfer in from other schools. If the courses the student has already taken are similar to what we offer, they will likely transfer straight across. If your child is considering this option, the registrar will need to see an official transcript and the academic catalogue from the student’s previous school at least a few weeks before he or she arrives.
Is NBC accredited?
NBC is not accredited. We hold to high academic standards which allow our students to transfer easily to a number of other Bible colleges and seminaries in Canada. However, our focus has always been more on the Bible, ministry training, and spiritual growth than on pure academics. Our strength is our ability to focus on those three things while keeping the cost affordable for our students.
Does NBC have distance or online learning?
No, we do not presently have a formal distance education program. However, we have occasionally made special arrangements for students in our three- or four-year programs to do some correspondence courses.
My child has expressed interest in being a Youth Pastor or a Missionary. I notice that NBC doesn’t offer as many courses in those subjects as larger schools. What would you recommend?
Even though NBC is small, we offer students as much diversity as possible. We offer several 1- or 2-week courses each year for which we bring in instructors from other schools or missions organizations, so students still get variety and a high quality of instruction. Some students choose to attend NBC for a year or two and then transfer to a larger school, much like students who save money by starting their university education at a community college.
What sorts of Missions opportunities does NBC have?
Each student is required to be involved in some sort of student ministry. Some examples of the ministries are: working with youth on native reserves, teaching kids clubs, helping youth pastors in local churches, prison ministry, seniors ministry, and music and drama presentations at various churches.
Our first- and second-year students get to participate in a short missions trip in the second semester. The freshman trip exposes the students to a broad range of needs and ministry opportunities in an aboriginal community context. The second-year class travels to Vancouver to experience a variety of missions and ministry opportunities in urban and inner city contexts within Canada.
In addition to these program requirements, NBC organizes a cross-cultural (usually to another country)missions trip every few years in which students can voluntarily participate. A group of students travelled to Honduras in the summer of 2007.
What denomination is NBC affiliated with?
NBC is an interdenominational school and not connected to any one church, so anyone is welcome to attend. Nipawin has many churches of nearly every denomination, so there is quite a bit of diversity for those who would like to attend NBI.
How many students attend NBC?
Last year we had 46 students. Some years we have had up to about 80. NBC’s size provides a unique atmosphere where students have a safe environment to learn, ask questions and struggle through the tough issues.
What sports are available at NBC?
Currently we have a men’s hockey team (though girls are allowed to play), and we have men’s and women’s soccer teams. We have had basketball, volleyball, and badminton in the past, but currently there is not enough interest among our student body to offer those sports. A recreational indoor soccer league uses NBC’s gym once a week, and about half of our students usually join the league each year.
